dipnoi - dipnoi (dipneusti)
dipnoi - Lung-fish. A sub-class of Osteichthyes or of Choanichthyes. Fresh-water. Fairly common fossils, but only three living genera, all tropical: Protopterus (African), Lepidosiren (South American), Epiceratodus (Australian). Bony skeleton; paired fins with a central skeletal axis; nostrils opening both on to face and into mouth; cosmoid scales or derivatives of them. Differ from Crossopterygii in their peculiar tooth plates, used to crush shells of small molluscs on which they feed.
