Thick-walled and floored, but with thin roof; its internal cavity is fourth ventricle. Primitively concerned with coordination of impulses from lateral line, ear, taste, and touch receptors. Contains important centres for respiratory movement, control of bloodvessels and heart, etc. Glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves arise from it.
