polymorph - POLYMORPH (POLYMORPHONUGLEAR LEUCOCYTE, GRANULOCYTE)
polymorph - Kind of white blood cell of vertebrates. 7-9 micrometres diameter in man, with darkly staining nucleus constricted into a number of lobes (lobation of nucleus may be absent in some vertebrates). Cytoplasm usually contains conspicuous granulations, which are the equivalent of large lysosomes. Polymorphs form 65-75 per cent of white blood cells in man. Actively phago-cytic especially when, in inflammation, they invade the tissues. Produced continually in bone marrow (myeloid tissue) each polymorph having only a short life. In man, granulations of most polymorphs (neutrophils) stain preferentially with neither acid nor basic dyes, those of some (eosinophils) stain strongly with acid dyes, those of a few (basophils) with basic dyes.
