polymorphism - Having several different forms. Particularly used of distinct kinds of individual belonging to one species, occurring in fairly constant proportions within a freely interbreeding population. E.g. within some species of butterfly there co-exist individuals which mimic other species and individuals which do not; another example is human blood groups. Dimorphism of the two sexes is exactly analogous. The different types are commonly controlled by different genes of one allelomorphic set. Insect castes are a special case of polymorphism.
