seta - (Bot.). Stalk of sporogonium in mosses and liverworts. (Zool.). Bristle or 'hair' of invertebrates. (True hair is a feature of mammals only.) Produced by epidermis, consisting either (a) solely of cuticular material, or (b) of hollow projection of cuticle enclosing an epidermal cell or part of one. Type (a) also known as chaetae are characteristic of Polychaeta and Oligo-chaeta. Setae of insects are of type (b).
