sexual selection - A possible mode of evolution suggested by Darwin. The females of a population are supposed to select for mating only males having certain characteristics and thereby to transmit these characteristics to future generations to the exclusion of characteristics of rejected suitors. Darwin explained the origin of many secondary sexual characters in this way, especially brilliant adornment and courtship behaviour. In Darwin's strict sense sexual selection is probably of rather limited importance since even where a female has a choice between males, which is infrequent, the rejected males will usually find a mate elsewhere and so their characteristics will not be eliminated. The evolution of secondary sexual characters is probably more a matter of natural selection, one pair (male and female) of animals reproducing more successfully than another because of the characters they possess, including those characters serving sexual stimulation.
