agathocles - Agathocles (361-289 b.c.);
agathocles - Tyrant of Syracuse. Of humble birth,.he entered the army as a common soldier, but having married the widow of his wealthy patron Damas, became the richest man in Syracuse. Expelled from the city by his enemies, he returned with a band of mercenaries and was besieged in Syracuse 310 b.c., but triumphantly carried the war into the enemy's country in N. Africa. Henceforth (307 B.C.) he was kins of all Sicily. His successful campaigns against the Bruttii in Italy and the people of the Lipari islands consolidated his rule.
