The European Silver Fir. The plate, drawn in spring, shows on the right, male flowers (b) composed as at (C) of scales (D), stamens (E). Also, female flowers (f) composed of scales (G) bearing ovules (H). These ripen to form cones (i), which are shown at 12 months old, attached to the stem, and fully ripe, 18 months old, detached therefrom. Ripe cones break up into scales (k) releasing seeds (1). In other species, cones ripen in 6 months, (a) winter bud of male flower.
