aorta, dorsal - Artery of vertebrates through which passes arterial blood to all the body, except the head and in some species the front limbs. Lies just below vertebral column, throughout most of the latter's length. In tetrapod vertebrates it is the continuation of the systemic arch (in mammals this arch, and sometimes the dorsal aorta too, is called the aorta). In fish it arises from the arteries drawing blood from the gills (efferent branchial arteries). In its course it gives off several large branches to viscera and limbs, and eventually in the tail becomes the caudal artery.
