aortic arches - Paired arteries (usually six) of vertebrate embryos, connecting ventral aorta with dorsal aorta by running up between gill slits or gill-pouches on each side, one in each visceral arch. In fish, develop into arteries carrying blood to and from gills. In tetrapods the two most anterior pairs (between mouth and the pouch equivalent to spiracle; and between latter and second pouch) disappear. Third pair forms proximal part of carotid arteries, fourth becomes systemic arch (on one side only, in birds and mammals), fifth disappears, and sixth forms part of pulmonary arteries.
