apomixis - Reproduction which has superficial appearance of ordinary sexual cycle (amphimixis) but actually occurs without fertilization and/or meiosis. Usually taken to include parthenogenesis; apospory, in some plants, where an ordinary diploid sporophyte cell substitutes for the spore, meiosis being omitted, so that the gameto-phyte is diploid; and apogamy, in Pteridophytes, in which a gameto-phyte cell gives rise directly to a sporophyte, the gametophyte being diploid. Has also been applied recently to include vegetative reproduction whenever the normal sexual processes are not functioning or are greatly reduced in activity. See also: Agamospermy.
