autostylig jaw-suspension - Attachment of primitive upper jaw (palatoquadrate) of vertebrates direct to neurocranium (See also: Hyostylie Jaw-Suspension). Occurs in the earliest known fishes with jaws (Acanthodii) which were probably succeeded by hyostylic descendants. Autostyly was then reacquired independently by Holocephali and by Dipnoi and tetrapods; in these, the palatoquadrate actually fuses with the brain-case.
