blastopore - (Zool.). Transitory opening on surface of embryo in gastrula stage, by which the internal cavity (archenteron) communicates with the exterior; produced by imagination, of superficial cells in the course of movements of gastrulation f to form endodenn and mesoderm. In many animals the blastopore becomes the anus; in others it closes up at the end of gastrulation, and the anus later breaks through at the same place or nearby. In some animals gastrulation movements carry endoderm and meso-derm cells inwards at a particular place without forming an open pore (e.g. in a primitive streak); the place of inward migration may[then be called a virtual blastopore.
