bryophyta - Division of plant kingdom comprising Hepaticae (liverworts), Musci (mosses), Anthocerotae (hornworts). A small group of plants with wide distribution. Habitats various, e.g. wet banks, on soil, rock surfaces; some are epiphytes, others aquatic. Small plants, flat, prostrate, or with a central stem up to a foot in length bearing leaves. Lacking vascular tissue. Attached to substratum by rhizoids. Reproducing sexually by fusion of male and female gametes produced in nudticellular sex organs: antheridia, liberating male gametes motile by flagella,and archegonia, containing a single egg. Sexual reproduction is followed by development of a capsule, containing spores, which give rise, directly or indirectly, to new plants, Bryophy ta show a well-marked alternation of generations. The plant itself is the gameto-phyte generation, and the capsule is the sporophyte generation, nutritionally dependent on the gametophyte.
