calorie - (Written with capital C.) Amount of heat required to raise i kg of water from 15° to 16° C. One thousand times larger than the ordinary calorie of physics. Used as measure of energy turn-over in animals. E.g. daily energy output (as heat, work, and energy content of excretions) of an active man is on the average equivalent to about 3000 Calories, and food yielding that amount of heat when burned must be provided to maintain this output.
