chromosome map - Plan showing positions of the genes on a chromosome. For eucaryotes, it can be constructed from data of crossing-over, the frequency of crossing-over between the genes taken in pairs indicating their linear order, i.e. relative positions; the distances on such a map are given in units of crossover value. This provides a linkage map. Or it can be constructed by observations of localized aberrations of a chromosome (especially salivary) which produce phenotypes known to be associated with presence or absence of particular genes. The results of the two methods agree. Various methods of chromosome mapping are used for procaryotes; for bacteria, especially by the interruption at various times of the linear transfer of a chromosome between two cells during mating.
