clearing - clearing;clearing - Part of usual process of preparation of tissues for microscopical examination. Consists in soaking tissue in substances such as benzene or xylene, after dehydration. These substances bridge the gap, caused by mutual insolubility, between the alcohol used in dehydration and the substances usually used in the next stage of preparation, e.g. paraffin wax (See also: Microtome), or Canada balsam, by being miscible with both. Incidentally the tissue becomes very transparent in most clearing agents.
