colghigine - Drug (an alkaloid) which prevents mitosis proceeding beyond metaphase (by inhibiting spindle through disruption of microtubules). In actively dividing tissue of an organism treated with colchicine there is an accumulation of cells arrested in metaphase making easy the detection of proliferating regions. Reversion of colchicine-inhibited metaphase nuclei to the resting state results in polyploidy since the chromosomes have duplicated without the chromatids separating into daughter nuclei. This is a method of inducing polyploidy artificially, important in obtaining new agricultural and horticultural varieties. See also: Allotetraploid.
