complementation - (1) Inter-cistron complementation. The effect of two homologous chromosomes, each mutant and defective but in different cistrons, which when together in a diploid organism or in a heterokaryon, supply each other's deficiencies and give a pheno-type which is very similar to, or identical with, normal (wild type). (2) Intra-cistron (or inter-allele) complementation. Interaction in a diploid organism or in a heterokaryon of two alleles of the same cistron to give a phenotype closer to, but not identical with normal (wild type) than either could give alone.
