contractile vacuole - Of Protista, particularly in many fresh water species, and of fresh water sponges, a membrane-surrounded vacuole which periodically expands, filling with water, and then suddenly contracts, expelling its contents to exterior of cell. It probably removes the water which continually enters the cell by osmosis from the environment or with food.
