corpus luteum

corpus luteum defined in 1951 year

corpus luteum - corpus luteum;
corpus luteum - Temporary organ of internal secretion, of the hormone progesterone. Formed in mammals in interior of a ruptured Graafian follicle after ovulation, by ingrowth of follicle wall, which becomes yellow secretory luteal tissue (corpus luteum means 'yellow body'). Formation occurs as a result of action of luteinizing hormone and its secretory activity requires presence of lactogenic hormone of pituitary. If ovulation does not result in fertilization, then corpus luteum soon degenerates (See also: Oestrous Cycle). If fertilization occurs, corpus luteum persists and continues secreting during part or all of pregnancy. Bodies similar to corpus luteum occur in viviparous vertebrates other than mammals.
