Cells dorsi-ventrally compressed, majority naked with firm cell membrane, others with cellulose wall. Reproduction by cell division. Variously pigmented. Possess chlorophylls a and c, carotenoids α-, ε- carotene, xanthophylls; and, in some genera, phycobilin pigments distinct from those of Cyanophyta and Rhodophyta. Food reserve is starch or starch-like. A few heterotrophs occur, saprophytic or ingesting food particles. Occur in marine and fresh water.
