ecdysis - Moulting, In arthropoda, periodic shedding of cuticle. In insects inner part of old cuticle is absorbed, the rest is split at line of weakness, and the insect draws itself out, clothed in a preformed soft new cuticle. By swallowing air the insect quickly increases its bulk and the new cuticle finally hardens a size larger than the old. The lining of all but the finest tracheae is shed with the old cuticle. Ecdysis in insects is initiated by a hormone (ecdysone); it does not usually occur in adult insects. In reptiles, periodic shedding of outer layer of epidermis occurs in all, except crocodiles.
