ectoplasm - ectoplasm
ectoplasm - (Bot.). (Ectoplast) Synonymous with external plasma membrane. (Zool.). (Cell cortex). Outer layer of cytoplasm, which differs from inner cytoplasm (endoplasm) in many cells, though the two regions grade into each other. Unlike endoplasm, ectoplasm is usually semi-solid (a fibrous gel, in which case it may be called plasmagel) and often contains relatively few granules, e.g. in many ova and Protozoa. In planktonic Protozoa it may be highly vacuolated. Ectoplasm has important role in many forms of cell movement, including cell-division and amoeboid movement; but active as it is this is not the kind of ectoplasm which undertakes table-turning.
