endodermis - Innermost layer of cortex, surrounding the stele. Characteristic of all roots, and of stems of pteridophytes and some dicotyledons. Consists of closely fitting cells with distinctive wall modifications. Most characteristic is band of wall material, Casparian strip, impervious to water, in radial and transverse walls. With age, especially in monocotyledons, cells (except passage cells) may become further modified by deposition of layer of suberin over entire inner surface of wall followed, particularly on inner tangential wall, by layer of cellulose, sometimes lignified. Important physiologically in control of transfer of water and solutes between cortex and vascular cylinder, since these must pass through protoplasts of endodermal cells.
