eugaryotig - (Of cells or organisms). Having the nucleus separated from the cytoplasm by a nuclear membrane, and the genetic material borne on a number of chromosomes consisting of DNA and protein. Nuclear division is by mitosis. Cytoplasm contains membrane-bounded organelles most important of which for metabolism are mitochondria associated with respiration, and chloroplasts with photosynthesis. A flagellum or cilium, when present, contains eleven longitudinal strands, characteristically arranged. Eucaryotic cells are the unit of structure in all organisms except bacteria and blue-green algae. Compare with: Procarjotic.
