foramen - Opening. F. magnum, opening in back of vertebrate skull at articulation with vertebral column, through which spinal cord passes. F. ovate, of heart; opening between right and left auricles of embryonic mammal, allowing a large part of the oxygenated blood, which returns from the placenta through the vena cava inferior to the right auricle, to go straight to the left auricle, then to left ventricle and so through the aorta to the arteries of the body, instead of to the right ventricle and thence to pulmonary artery. Normally closes at birth.
