gamete - gamete (germ-cell)
gamete - Reproductive cell whose nucleus and often cytoplasm fuses with that of another gamete (constituting fertilization), the resulting cell (zygote) developing into a new individual. Gametes are haploid. They are usually differentiated into female gamete (immobile, with massive cytoplasm, able to develop when stimulated, called the ovum) and male gamete (moves or is moved to female gamete, with little cytoplasm e.g. sperm of animals), one of each fusing to form the zygote. Some animal and plant species produce cells, which are also called gametes, of substantially the same kind as a female gamete of the same or related organism, but which develop into a new individual without fertilization (i.e. by parthenogenesis); such gametes are usually diploid.
