geotropism - geotropism
geotropism - (Bot.). Orientation of plant parts under stimulus of gravity. Main stems, negatively geotropic, grow vertically upwards and, if laid horizontal, elongation of cells in growth region at tip is increased on lower side and growing tip turns upwards, resuming vertical position. Main roots, positively geotropic, grow vertically downwards and if laid horizontal, elongation of cells in apical growth region is increased on upper side and root turns downwards again. Generally accepted response mechanism is based on redistribution of auxin under stimulus of gravity, accumulation of auxin on lower side of organ accelerating cell elongation in stem and retarding it in root. Recent work suggests instead that effect is due to unequal production of auxin on upper and lower side, i.e. to changes in auxin metabolism. See also: Diageotropism and Plagio-geotropism.
