glycolysis - First stage in the series of chemical reactions of respiration and fermentation. Conversion of glucose, by means of a complex system of enzymes and co-enzymes, into lactic acid (in animals, some fungi and bacteria) or pyruvic acid (in plants, yeast and some other fungi, few bacteria). Some energy in the form of ATP is made available for biochemical work, but this is small in comparison with that liberated in Krebs cycle; it is of great importance in satisfying for short period energy demand beyond that provided by oxygen availability, e.g. in animals in short bursts of intense muscular activity.
