heterosporous - Having two kinds of spores, microspores and megaspores, that give rise, respectively, to distinct male and female gametophyte generations; a condition found in certain Pteri-dophyta (where the term was first applied) and in Spermatophyta. In the former group there is a conspicuous difference in the size of the two kinds of spores, indicated in the terms applied to them, but this is not usually found in the Spermatophyta. Here the terms indicate homologies with the small and large spores of hetero-sporous pteridophytes rather than differences in size. Compare with: Homo-sporous.
