independent assortment

independent assortment defined in 1951 year

independent assortment - independent assortment;
independent assortment - The chance distribution to the gametes of alleles, the distribution of members of one pair having no influence on distribution of members of another. So that if an individual has one pair of alleles, A and a, and another pair, B and b, it will form approximately equal numbers of gametes of the four possible chance combinations of one member from each pair: A and B, A and b, a and B, a and b. Mendel's Second Law asserts this, but it requires the qualification that independent assortment does not apply to linked genes (See also: Linkage), but only to those lying on different chromosomes, since it is due to the independent behaviour of chromosome pairs during meiosis.
