larynx - Dilated region of upper part of trachea of tetrapods, just at its junction with pharynx. 'Adam's apple' of man. Has plates of cartilage in its walls, movable by muscles which open and close glottis. In some tetrapods, including most mammals, a dorso-ventral fold of membrane (vocal cord), situated within larynx, projects into its lumen from each side wall. Vibration of cords produces vocal sounds. Movement of the cartilage plates varies stretch of vocal cords, and hence alters pitch of voice. See also: Syrinx.
