leaf blade - Thin, flattened, conspicuous portion of leaf, seat of photosynthesis, for which it is admirably adapted; may be simple, consisting of one piece, or compound, divided into separate parts or leaflets. Typical dicotyledon leaf presents large surface area with photosynthesizing cells arranged immediately below upper epidermis allowing maximum absorption of light energy. It is provided with a system of veins bringing water and mineral nutrients and removing products of photosynthesis; and with a system of intercellular spaces opening to the atmosphere through stomata and permitting gaseous exchange.
