luteinizing hormone - Gonadotrophic hormone secreted by anterior lobe of pituitary in vertebrates. In females, activates the oestrogen-producing tissue of the ovaries, probably promotes the final stages of development of ovarian follicles, produces ovulation, and in mammals initiates corpus luteum development. In males, activates the androgen-producing tissue of the testes, and in some vertebrates produces transfer of sperm from testis to ducts.
