nastic movement - (In plants) response to a stimulus that is independent of direction of stimulus. May be a growth curvature, e.g. opening and closing of many flowers in response to changes in light intensity; or a sudden change in turgidity of particular cells causing a rapid change in position of particular plant organs, e.g. rapid folding of leaflets and drooping of leaves of sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) when lightly struck. Nastic movements are classified according to nature of stimulus, e.g. photonasty, response to alteration in light intensity, thermonasty, to alteration in heat intensity, seismonasty, to shock.
