nephridium - Organ present in many invertebrates (Platyhelmin-thes, Nemertea, Rotifera, Annelida, larvae of some Mollusca) and in amphioxus. Probably excretes, and helps to control water content of body. Consists of a tube of ectodermal origin opening to the exterior at one end. The other end may be closed (protone-phridium) with flame cells opening into it; or it may open into the coelom. A nephridium may combine with a coelomoduct forming a nephromixium.
