peripheral nervous system - All the rest of the nervous system when the central nervous system is excluded. It consists mainly of nerves of various sizes (up to half-inch diameter in man). The major nerves branch repeatedly after leaving the central nervous system to distribute their numerous nerve fibres (perhaps 100,000 in a big vertebrate limb nerve) to the many different effectors and receptors they serve. There are no synapses in the course of most nerves; the nerve fibres are usually continuous right through from the receptors to the central nervous system (in the case of sensory nerve fibres) or from the central nervous system to the effectors (in the case of motor nerve fibres). Though they may run side by side in the nerve, sensory and motor fibres do not usually interact except via the synapses in the central nervous system. But synapses do occur in certain parts of the peripheral nervous system; See also: Autonomic Nervous System, Nerve Net.
