physiologic specialization - Existence within a particular species of a number of genetically different races or forms, which, though indistinguishable in structure, show differences in physiological, biochemical, or pathogenic characters. Of great significance in pathology. E.g. where a number of races of a plant pathogen exist, differing in their patho-genicity towards varieties of the host plant, the problem of breeding a resistant variety is complicated, more so when new races, showing new differences in pathogenicity, may continually be produced. This is the case, e.g. with Puccinia graminis tritici, causing Black Stem Rust of wheat, one of the most serious of all plant diseases. More than 300 physiologic races of this fungus have so far been demonstrated.
