protochordata - Term sometimes applied to a heterogeneous group of animals of phylum Chordata, related to the vertebrates, which they resemble in possessing gill slits, noto-chord, and dorsal hollow nerve cord, or at least traces of these. Includes Acrania, a group consisting of various species of amphi-oxus, a small animal which looks fish-like, but has no skeleton, brain, or eyes; Urochordata (sea-squirts, etc.), which in the adult form have little resemblance to vertebrates: and Hemichor-data (e.g. Balanoglossus) worm-like forms whose vertebrate affinities are much more remote.
