Usually found as subtropical or tropical epiphytes. Small, rhizomatous plants with dichotomously branched aerial shoots, vascular system protostelic to siphonostelic. Sporangia borne in groups of two or three in axils of small, two-lobed sporophylls. Homosporous, gametophytes subterranean, lacking chlorophyll, mycotrophic; bearing antheridia and archegonia scattered indiscriminately.
