pure line - pure line
pure line - Succession of generations of organisms homozygous for all genes. All variation (except for occasional mutation) in a pure line is due to environmentally produced modifications, which are not inherited. Selection of certain of these modifications for breeding does not therefore alter the characteristics of the pure line; it breeds true. Pure lines are obtained by intensive inbreeding, most efficiently by self-fertilization.
