root - That part of vascular plants that usually grows downwards into the soil, anchoring plant and absorbing water and nutrient salts. Roots cannot be distinguished from stems on basis of their position with respect to soil since roots of some plants may be wholly or partly above ground, while other plants possess underground stems. Externally, roots differ from stems principally in that they do not bear leaves and buds; they also possess at their tip a protective layer of cells, the root-cap. Internally, roots differ from stems in arrangement of vascular tissue in a central core and with protoxylem exarch.
