secretion defined in 1951 yearsecretion - secretion;
secretion - (1) The passage of (usually complex) material elaborated by a cell from the inside to the outside of its plasma membrane; the material (itself called a secretion) having a special function in the organism. Secretion is probably an activity of most cells, but is specialized in gland-cells. Usually takes place by extrusion of material, but may involve destruction of whole cell (holo-crine secretion, e.g. sebaceous gland). (2) Secretion, when used in contrast to simple diffusion, means that the cell does work in passing the secretion through its plasma-membrane against the forces of diffusion, e.g. secretion of hypotonic fluid such as sweat.
