semicircular canals

semicircular canals defined in 1951 year

semicircular canals - semicircular canals;
semicircular canals - Semicircular tubes, projecting from and joined at both ends to the inner ear of vertebrates. Gnatho-stomes have three on each side, occupying the three planes of space, two vertical at right-angles to each other, one horizontal. Agnatha have only the two vertical (in some only one). Angular acceleration (e.g. rapid turning) of the animal in any direction produces currents of fluid (endolymph) along the corresponding canal, which are detected by fine projections from sensory cells, and communicated to brain via auditory nerve.
