spirochaetes - Elongated, spirally twisted unicellular bacteria with thin delicate wall; moving by flexions of the body which are caused by contraction of an axial filament wound spirally round the cell protoplast, within cell wall. Filament consists of two groups of flagella-like fibrils, one anchored in cytoplasm at each end, and overlapping in centre. Some free-living, some parasitic and cause disease, e.g. syphilis.
