taxonomy - Study of the classification of organisms according to their resemblances and differences. Classical taxonomy is concerned with description, naming and classification on the basis of morphology. Use is also made of biochemical and serological data. Numerical taxonomy applies mathematical procedures as an aid to objective and precise assessment of observable similarities and differences between taxonomic groups. Cytotaxonomy classifies on basis of characters of somatic chromosomes. Experimental taxonomy is concerned with analysing patterns of variation in order to discover how they evolved, with identification of evolutionary units, determining by experiment the genetical inter-relationships between them and the role of environment in their formation.
