territory - (Zool.). An area or volume of the habitat occupied by an individual or group, trespassers on which, if they belong to the same species, are attacked. A common feature of vertebrate behaviour; has been found in fish, reptiles, birds, mammals. Particularly (though not exclusively) concerned with breeding behaviour, a male often holding a territory alone at first, being subsequently joined by female(s) who then share(s) in its defence throughout the breeding period.
