thallophyta - Division of plant kingdom containing the most primitive forms of plant life. Characterized by a simple plant body (thallus) and varying from unicellular, microscopic forms, to multi-cellular forms such as large seaweeds, 60 to 70 metres in length. Although these latter show internal tissue differentiation, there is no differentiation of root, stem, and leaf as in higher plants. Asexual reproduction is by spores and (except in bacteria) sexual reproduction by fusion of gametes produced in sexual organs of various types but consisting essentially of single cells. Includes algae, bacteria, fungi, lichens, slime fungi. A very diverse group which in modern systems of classifications has been replaced by a number of divisions representing distinct evolutionary lines amongst organisms of simple structure.
