Its phosphate is a co-enzyme (cocarboxylase), very widely (universally?) distributed in living organisms, concerned in carbohydrate metabolism. Synthesized by some bacteria, moulds, and flagellates, and by green plants, but required as a vitamin by many living things, including man and all vertebrates and insects tested. Deficiency in man causes beri-beri.
